Pomp and circumstance graced the Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club yesterday.
The Canadian Blind Lawn Bowling Championships for men and women began its first day of cornpetition, starting with opening ceremonies in the morning. The first draw of round-robin action took place in the afternoon.
It continues with two draws today and tomorrow and wraps up Thursday morning, weather permitting. The awards banquet is the main headquarters, Best Western Otonabee Inn. 6:30 p.m.Thursday.
The day began with parade marshall Jack Thompson and flag bearers Lucas Caidwell and Mitchel Dack, both 12 years old from the local club, leading the 16 bowlers representing four provinces onto centre green for opening ceremonies.
PLBC president Andy Caldwell r, welcomed the bowlers followed by talks from Ontario Blind Sports technical co-ordinator Nick Vescio and Ontario Lawn Bowling Association president Shirley Lenarduzzi.
Peterborough Mayor Paul Ayotte, MPP Jeff Leal and Canadian National Institute for the Blind supervisor Rose Kitney also spoke.
Following an introduction of the bowlers and umpire Gina Bellamy, eight-year-old Peterborough junior Nicholas Dack, threw out the first bowl.
Andy Caldwell beamed when talking about having the championships here.
« It's the first time for the national blind championships here and the first for a national competition of any kind in 100 years at the club.» he said. « That's pretty cool. We were approached last year by Shirley (Lenarduzzi) about having it here and were granted it in January. I had to sell it (to the executive) and the majority voted for it. We are excited about having it and have 15-20 volunteers each day helping Out. Some are students getting their community hours. It's very special. »
The event is divided into three sight classifications, from Bl to B3, from partial vision to legally blind. Ages range from 40-90. Games are 21 points with a time limit of three and-a-half hours. « Lawn bowling is one of seven sports we govern, » said Vescio. The winners here don't qualify for any event because there is no world championship this year.
What: Canadian Blind Lawn Bowling championships.
Where: Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club.
Who: Eight men and women from Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta. They qualified at provincial events.
When: Two draws today and tomorrrow, 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. with the final draw scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.
There are no championship matches with the winners declared on points from the round-robin. In the case of a tie, several tie-breaking formulas come intoplay.
Al Hanet, 71, from Kelowna, B.C. with his wife/coach Vi, said it was important to get that first win in such a format. A B2 level competi¬tor, he has won five national crowns and a bronze at the world championships, his best placing.
He opened with a 21-16 win over fellow B.C. bowler, Kjeld Toftdahl of White Rock. «You are more relaxed if you get that first win,» said Hanet. « It went back and forth and I had a little luck.»
Hanet, with less than five-degree vision since he was 27, said the greens were fast.
He has been a competitive bowler for the last 18 years and maintains a positive attitude.
« I feel lucky to see what I can see and do what I do,» he said. « My wife and I love it, love the competition and love to travel. Vi and I work well together. We are married 50 years this year. I couldn't do any of this without her. I eat and sleep this game. It's not a game to me, it's the game. I can't play other sports and I like the skill and strategy in lawn bowling.» Vi, like other coaches, is permitted on the field and acts as a guide. I tell him where the bowls are and help a lot with weight most important. I feel like I'm playing the game, too. I help him mentally, with focus and as a calming effect.
Other results the first day included Heather Green, Que. 21, Judi Moffat. Ont. 13; Shirley Cole, B.C.16, Heather Hannett, Alta 10 (game called after 26 total points); Nel De Bruyn, Ont. 21, Marie Schneider, B.C. 4; Randy Fred, B.C. 21, Charles Cradder, Ont. 1; Geoff Connor, Alta. 21, Richard Lee, Que. 9; Norman Green, Ont. 21, Ed McMillan, B.C. 18.
